About PON

At The PON Shop, we believe plant care should be simple, sustainable, and successful. After years of working in hydroponics, we saw how often traditional soils cause problems like pests, root rot, and inconsistent growth. That’s why we created our own mineral-based PON blend — a clean, reusable alternative that keeps plants thriving. Made from pumice, lava rock, and zeolite, PON gives roots the perfect balance of air, water, and nutrients, so your plants grow stronger with less hassle. Whether you’re a new plant parent or a seasoned collector, PON makes it easier to keep your plants healthy and beautiful.

What is PON?

PON is a premium soilless substrate made from a blend of natural minerals — pumice, lava rock, and zeolite. Unlike traditional soil, it’s clean, lightweight, and reusable, making it perfect for houseplants and specialty plants alike.

Each component plays a role: pumice adds airflow, lava rock keeps roots from sitting in water, and zeolite helps hold nutrients right where plants need them. Together, they create the ideal balance of air, water, and stability so roots can grow strong and healthy without the risk of rot, pests, or mess.

Think of it as a modern alternative to soil — simple, sustainable, and designed to help your plants thrive.

Better Drainage, Healthier Roots

PON creates an airy structure that keeps water moving, protecting your plants from root rot.

Stronger Growth with Minerals

Natural pumice, lava rock, and zeolite provide long-lasting support and help retain nutrients where roots need them.

Reusable & Sustainable

Simply rinse and refresh — one bag of PON can be used again and again, reducing waste.

How to Use PON

Getting started with PON is easy — and your plants will thank you with stronger, healthier roots.

  1. Rinse before use
Give your PON a quick rinse to remove dust and prep the minerals for planting.
  2. Pot your plant directly in PON
Fill your container just like you would with soil. The airy structure cradles roots while leaving room for water and oxygen.
  3. Choose your feeding style
Each bag of PON comes with a separate packet of Osmocote slow-release fertilizer, so you have full control over your plant’s feeding program:
    - For small pots (4–6"), mix in about ½ teaspoon (2–3 grams) of Osmocote.

    - For medium pots (6–10"), use about 1 teaspoon (5–6 grams).

    - For larger containers, apply 1–2 teaspoons per gallon of substrate.

Mix it evenly through the top layer of PON, or sprinkle on the surface for gradual feeding.
Want even more control? Skip Osmocote and water with your favorite liquid nutrient solution instead. PON works beautifully with either method.
  4. Water and watch roots thrive
With excellent drainage, nutrient retention, and airflow, roots grow stronger, faster, and healthier than in traditional soil. That means happier plants, fewer problems, and more reliable growth over time.
